Final Idea

As a result of various casting issues, we had to reconsider the age of our characters in order to utilise the time after school to film. We did this by creating teenage protagonists, which also meant altering the character's skill from writing to painting. Furthermore, we also switched the genders of our characters, and the protagonist's mental illness. The protagonist now being a teenage girl with Asperger's syndrome as well as having a male friend.

There is now a teenage girl with Asperger Syndrome who is extremely routine-centric and is socially isolated but has a passion and talent for painting and art. The new character (male friend) moves in next door, both of them going to the same school. After becoming friend sit is revealed to him that she is very good at painting, and she shows him her painting room where she paints and her regimented, geometric style of painting. She ruins one of her paintings by accident. She then gets into a panic and he helps her through this hiccup and she returns to painting geometrically again. The new male friend dies in a car crash along the line, sending her into a state of confusion. She is distraught and then paints in a more frantic way, making her paintings more and more abstract and expressive. The final shot is her painting in a gallery.

These changes were made for several reasons:
-       The age group - due to availability of actors we had to change it to a more accessible age group
-       The girl protagonist having Asperger Syndrome - this would subvert expectations more and the actor (studying drama) we had in mind was female
-       Painting not writing- the idea of a published book at 17 was too unrealistic so we changed to painting because there are more opportunities to put art in a local gallery.
-       His death – this would have an immediate and big impact on her after he has been introduced into her life and brought her out of her shell. The death is also final and adds to the uplifting idea that she spurs herself on.


So that the trailer does not give away too much of the narrative, much of the focus will be put on establishing the protagonist’s isolation from society as a result of her condition, as well as her relationship with her new friend and the general gist of what impact he has on her life.

What have you learned from your audience feedback? What we learned After showing the trailer for ‘Borderlines’ to our target audience, the response we received overall was extremely positive. We found that our dramatic use of sound and editing techniques in conjunction with the professional use of camera work made the storytelling shine through and effectively engaged the audience. This was shown by the fact that the audience was able to formulate an idea of what might happen in the rest of the film, creating a talking point without giving too much of the plot away. A majority of the audience was able to identify the genre of the trailer, sitting between drama and coming of age. It was pointed out that this was made apparent though the use of camerawork and framing, as well as the more naturalistic and subtle use of colour correction and layering of diegetic audio with appropriate emotive music and voiceover.
